Mohawk Island Lighthouse

A lighthouse enthusiast exploring the Great Lakes will soon realize there are many treasures to be discovered, tucked away in remote corners of the Lakes. One just has to know where to look. One such treasure is Mohawk (formerly Gull) Island lying within the Canadian waters of Lake Erie, about two miles east of Port Maitland, Ontario. The island is small (barely two acres in size), rocky, almost flat, and generally barren of vegetation. During storms, much of the island is awash. During the milder seasons of the year, there are enough high and dry areas of the island to serve as a bird sanctuary, under the control of the Canada Wildlife Service. It is offlimits to the public during the nesting season, April 1 through August 1. Even after the nesting season, visitors to the island will feel
as if they stepped onto the set of Alfred Hitchcock's movie The Birds. Everywhere you walk, birds group, move and take flight. Caution is well advised. But a visit is well worth the effort to see first hand a very unique lighthouse.
