Building Materials: Cast iron; 8 galvanized wire rope guys, 5/8" dia. fitted with turnbuckles, hooks & straps for adjustment, hold shaft in position.
General Description: Shaft of cast iron is composed of 3 sections, bolted together at joints. It is surmounted by a lantern & at a distance of 3' 6" below a gallery deck in 2 parts, also of cast iron, is clamped to the shaft.

Kind of Foundation and Depth Below Surface: Base of the shaft rests on pine sills 12" square, in cellar of crib, 6' below deck of crib & 3' above level of lake. Cellar is decked over & made water tight. A hatchway gives access to cellar, & ventilating pipe 4" dia., furnishes supply of air for pump.

Miscellaneous Remarks: Pipe carrying gas from carburetor to burner in lantern, is carried up thru interior of shaft, & air req'd for combustion obtained in same manner from cellar below. Band ventilator placed around outside of shaft, under lantern proved inefficient.
