Fitness Level:

Fitness level for South Africa is easy as most lighthouses are accessed by bus or boat. A few like "Cape Point Upper" require a short uphill walk on a gravel pathway. As always, moderate fitness is required to climb the hundreds of lighthouse steps we encounter on our journey.

MORE TOUR DETAILS:

Lighthouses are essential to coastal navigation between Cape Town and Durban where safe harbors so very few and far between. The warm Agulhas current sweeps southwards out of the Indian Ocean, and collides directly with the very cold Antarctic circumpolar current, creating steep and dangerous seas. We start our journey with four nights in Cape Town – a delightful city with a Mediterranean type climate. The first six lighthouses are relatively close to Cape Town. Cape Columbine is the only lighthouse we visit along the Western Cape, before heading east to South Africa’s beautiful wine country and then along the “garden route” to Port Elizabeth. Beyond Port Elizabeth we spend a night in Addo Elephant National Park. All major African animal groups live wild and free in this area. Trackers will join us for two game drives. From Addo we go to Great Fish River and Hood Point lighthouse near East London. Next we fly north to Durban where we visit six more lighthouses and end our lighthouse safari at Tugela lighthouse, before visiting Shakaland to observe Zulu culture.

Led by Chris and Janet Brookes.

POST TOUR OPTION – KAMPAMA RIVER LODGE

Everyone at some point should experience the natural beauty, birds and animals of the African wilderness. Beyond the Kampana River luxury lodge there is absolutely nothing but the African bush for miles and miles (Kruger National Park is as big as the state of Rhode Island). We rise early to look for animals as they set out on their early morning hunt for food and water. In the heat of the day we relax and swim, before going out again on the evening game drives. Kampana is a very special place and, like all bush lodges, is small. We can only reserve 15 rooms which are assigned on a first come first serve basis.

Tuesday, March 27th:  Early Morning Game Drive, Breakfast. Flights to Johannesburg and International Transfers Home (B)
