Land of Tribute and Lighthouses
July 8, 2019 – July 15, 2019
Long Island was sculpted by melted glaciers, which is why there is a clear difference between the hilly North Shore and the flat South Shore, The Native Americans called Long Island Paumanok which meant Land of Tribute.
Many people today think Long Island is simply a suburb of New York City, but it’s actually a fascinating destination. Widely known for the rich and famous who regularly visit the quaint villages and sparkling beaches of its Hamptons region, Long Island has always drawn famous characters to its shores. People such as Teddy Roosevelt, Charles Lindbergh, Walt Whitman, just to name a few. But it’s not just the actors, politicians, artists and adventurers who make up the most famous components of Long Island’s culture it is also us lighthouse nuts.
At the easternmost point of Long Island lies Montauk Point Lighthouse. Commissioned by President George Washington in 1792 and built in 1796, this quaint lighthouse is the oldest in New York and the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the country. If you’re not afraid of heights, and we are not, climb the 137 steps all the way to the top for some spectacular and stunning views just waiting to be photographed and put into your scrap books.
Join us and enjoy the glamorous history and phenomenal scenic landscapes all while we visit over 20 lighthouses and some pretty cool maritime museums.
