The Outer Banks of North Carolina: Lighthouses & First Flight

The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and a small portion of Virginia. The large number of shipwrecks off this coast has given this area the nickname, Graveyard of the Atlantic. It is also the site of the Wright Brothers first flight which took place in 1903 at Kill Devil Hills near the town of Kitty Hawk. Their memorial will be only one of our stops as the Society returns to the Outer Banks for a tour that offers several lighthouse climbs and vast natural scenery.

We are thrilled that Bodie Island and Oak Island Lighthouses are now open for climbing and the Roanoke River Lighthouse has been fully restored atop pilings in the water near Edenton. Our tour begins in Raleigh, NC, where we gather for our welcome dinner and venture out the next day to visit the newly restored Roanoke River Lighthouse and a replica of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. Our first OBX lighthouse will be the Currituck Lighthouse followed by the heart and soul of the tour – the lights of Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras and Okracoke. Returning to the mainland, our next destination will be the Cape Lookout Lighthouse.

A free day in Wilmington provides an opportunity to take in the Wilmington Riverwalk, Battleship North Carolina, Arlie Gardens or just sit back and experience the grandeur and charm of Old Wilmington. The next day on the way to the Bald Island Ferry we will pass the Price Creek Lighthouse ruins and then take the ferry to see Old Baldy. While on the island, we will view the footprint and remains of the Cape Fear Lighthouse. The last climb of the tour will be at the Oak Island Lighthouse near Southport.

If it has been a while since you have been to the Outer Banks or you have never been there – this is your chance to visit and climb some of the country’s most iconic lighthouses. Register now – the OBX Lighthouses are calling you!
