Newport to honor Lighthouse heroine Ida Lewis with gravesite ceremony on May 24

The Newport Historical Society, alongside the U.S. Lighthouse Society and U.S. Coast Guard, will honor Ida Lewis - the legendary lighthouse keeper once called "the bravest woman in America" - during a public gravesite ceremony on Saturday, May 24 at 1 p.m. at the Common Burying Ground on Farewell Street.

Lewis, who served as keeper of the Lime Rock Light Station in Newport Harbor for over 50 years, is credited with saving at least 18 lives, though some say the real number was far higher.

Restoration of Hunting Island Lighthouse, SC, closer to completion

The historic Hunting Island Lighthouse has been closed to the public for extensive restoration since early February 2022, but light has finally emerged at the end of the tunnel.

Scaffolding had encased the outside of the lighthouse for nearly a year and it has finally been removed in the past week, signalling the end of the exterior renovation phase.
