Ladies who kept lights burning: women lighthouse keepers celebrated at Englewood Library

It's a familiar image - whether it's Florence Nightingale and her lamp, the Statue of Liberty and her torch, or the damsel with the beacon at the start of every Columbia Picture. When our culture wants to make women look heroic - which is, historically, seldom - it gives her a lantern. Maybe that's why there's always been a mystique about female lighthouse keepers.

Thomas Point Shoal, MD, Lighthouse Marks 150 Years Have You Toured It Yet??

The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, a historic beacon that has guided mariners through the Chesapeake Bay since 1875, is celebrating a milestone anniversary in 2025. As the last surviving screwpile lighthouse in its original location still in use, it stands as a symbol of Maryland's maritime heritage and a vital piece of American history.

The Light of the Patara Lighthouse (Turkey) will Shine Again After Centuries

The ancient lighthouse in Patara, built by Roman Emperor Nero and destroyed by natural disasters, has reached the final stages of reconstruction work, which involves rebuilding it from its ruins using original stones, and will once again illuminate the way for sailors.

Summer events planned to celebrate West Point lighthouse turning 150 years old

The West Point lighthouse is turning 150 this summer, and plenty of events are planned to mark the occasion.

Construction of the distinct striped square-tapered tower began in 1875. Since then, the western Prince Edward Island landmark has been featured in many tourism promotions as well as on postage stamps.

Victory at Trafalgar: Lighthouse set to be given protected status

The Spanish government is taking action that would block plans for a restaurant in the landmark near the site of Nelson's final battle.
