Rose Island (RI) 2025 Artist Residency application now open
The application for the third annual Rose Island Artist Residency is now open! We're offering Rhode Island-based artists the chance to spend 6 nights on the island this September, working on their projects.

Up to 8 artists will be selected for participation. Artists whose work will be uniquely inspired or influenced by the environment and/or history of Rose Island are especially encouraged to apply.

Eldred Rock Lighthouse (AK) Lantern Room Window Replacement
The Lantern Room Window Replacement contract, performed by Coffer Construction of Ann Arbor, MI, was completed in late July 2024 to the relief and delight of our entire board. This project was the culmination of four summers of remediating the lantern room (and stairwells leading to it) of lead paint and rust.

Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society (NY) cancels music festival for 2025
It is still early in 2025, but the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society (HLPS) is already working on its list of projects and events for the coming season, including a refocus on renovation projects, additional lighthouse tours, and the end of its annual Musicfest, according to a press release on Feb. 19.

"After 15 successful years, we will not be hosting the Lighthouse Musicfest in 2025," said Pam Setchell, HLPS President.

Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers (MI) starts season in May
The Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association announced its 2025 calendar of events, inviting visitors to explore and celebrate the maritime history of Lake Michigan.

The association operates four lighthouses: Big Sable Point Lighthouse, Ludington North Breakwater Light, Little Sable Point Lighthouse and White River Light Station and Museum.

Piedras Blancas Light Station (CA) celebrates 150 years since first lighting
The Piedras Blancas Light Station has turned 150 years old.

"We had much more shipwrecks along the coast, and it helped folks navigate up and down the coast," said Ryan Cooper, the Piedras Blancas Light Station Manager.

As coastal project aims to save Madisonville's iconic Tchefuncte River Lighthouse (LA), new concern arises
On foggy mornings, as it has for close to 200 years, a light at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River powers through the murk to guide a mariner on his journey.

Built in 1837, the Tchefuncte River Lighthouse has undergone a few renovations over the years, but still serves its original purpose.

State of Michigan continues to support restoration of iconic lighthouses
Since 2021, the State Historic Preservation Office has awarded over $390,000 to restore lighthouses, among them Grand Haven Inner Pier Light, Eagle Harbor Light Station in Keweenaw County and, most recently, North Pierhead Lighthouse in Manistee.

The projects are part of a plan for preserving historic icons along the Great Lakes.

Cabo de Palos lighthouse (Spain) granted maximum heritage protection
The lighthouse of Cabo de Palos, one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Murcia coast, has now been granted the highest level of heritage protection under Spanish law.

The Royal Decree, approved by the Council of Ministers, officially classifies the lighthouse as a Site of Cultural Interest, ensuring its long-term conservation
