HGTV's 'Bargain Block' to restore historic Beaver Island Lighthouse, MI
A project that was teased a year and a half ago has finally been announced: HGTV's "Bargain Block" will restore a historic lighthouse on Beaver Island.
Beaver Head Lighthouse is one of two on the island. It included a tower and an attached keeper's home at the south end of the island. Built in 1858, it's one of the oldest on the Great Lakes. It was decommissioned in 1962.

You can become keeper of the historic Tawas Point Lighthouse (MI) for two weeks
The 2025 Tawas Lighthouse Keeper program is now open for applications, offering teams of four a chance to step into the past and live in the keeper's dwelling at Tawas Point State Park in East Tawas.
For $250 per person, participants will stay in modern accommodations within the historic lighthouse, including two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower.

Lantern removed from Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, OR
Anyone who happened to be in the area of the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport late Wednesday morning, Jan. 15, may have witnessed a very unusual sight. A large crane lifted the lantern off of the lighthouse building and loaded it onto a flatbed truck to haul it off.
This was as part of a $1.6 million project to completely restore the exterior of the lighthouse, being done by the Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation, which manages the lighthouse property.

A walk to the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse, NY
There are plenty of reasons to visit the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse, but I usually stopped there before crossing over the Lake Chaplain Bridge on my way to Vermont so my children could get their wiggles out.
This time, I stopped because a puppy may or may not have an accident inside my car. Let's not take chances.

Thomas Point Shoal's (MD) Infamous Coyote Decoy Gets Own Storybook
It's certainly an imaginative premise for a children's book: a coyote takes up residence at a picturesque historic lighthouse, only to be swept away in a storm, heroically rescued, and finally returned to his place of honor standing at the lighthouse.
Or it would be an imaginative premise - if it weren't a true story!

Unsafe Sand Near Barnegat Lighthouse (NJ) Raises Alarm
Jointly, the Barnegat Light First Aid Squad and Volunteer Fire Co. issued a public service announcement this week to warn beach walkers about some unstable sand along the lighthouse/jetty walkway in Barnegat Lighthouse State Park.
"The sand is collapsing," the first aid squad reported online. "Use extreme caution while walking or simply avoid the area all together. The holes may not look intimidating, but they're as deep as six feet. Buried under the sand is not a situation you want to find yourself in. Please be careful and be safe."

Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse (MI) to be restored, open for tower climbs in 2026
This historic Lake Michigan lighthouse will soon undergo restoration, and then will open to the public for tower climbs, officials announced.
On Tuesday, the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association added the Manistee North Pierhead Light to the collection of lighthouses it operates. The light is owned by the city of Manistee, the organization announced today.
