Legendary Female Lighthouse Keeper Elizabeth Whitney Williams Inducted into Michigan Women's Hall of Fame

Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state (129) and over the course of the last two  hundred years since the first was erected, nearly 50 women have served as keepers of these iconic beacons.

Chief among those is Elizabeth (Whitney) VanRiper Williams who was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at ceremonies at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center in downtown Detroit.

Senate panel advances bill to create Chesapeake National Recreation Area (MD)

The Chesapeake Bay area is one step closer to becoming part of the national parks system.

Presque Isle Lighthouses (MI) presentation Dec. 4 at Heritage Center

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Education and Outreach Specialist Sophie Stuart will lead a Dec. 4 presentation called The Two Towers: An Archaeological Biography of the Garrity Family.

Lecture Highlights Alligator Reef Lighthouse (FL) Restoration

The History of Diving Museum's next "Immerse Yourself!" lecture will look at the efforts to preserve the iconic Alligator Reef Lighthouse.

The lecture, by Capt. Rob Dixon, will be on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7 pm. Dixon is a longtime boat operator and open-water swimmer based in Islamorada. He is also one of the leading voices in efforts to preserve the lighthouse.

'A shelter from the growling Atlantic': our stay in lighthouse keeper's cottage on Ireland's west coast

We cross a narrow strip of land under vast skies and follow a slim road. It cuts a straight line through the heart of County Clare's only peninsula - a jagged spearhead-shaped piece of land that dangles downward, like a tail, right into the Atlantic.

The landscape tapers as the mouth of the River Shannon appears to the south, and the ocean to the north, until we reach the tip of the spear at what seems to be the very edge of the world; and there it stands, defiant and elevated on an outcrop - Loop Head Lighthouse.

Twinning agreement for Scots and Japanese lighthouses

A twinning agreement between two lighthouses in Scotland and Japan has been reached.

The partnership, thought to be the first of its kind, hopes to highlight the shared heritage and promote tourism at the Mull of Galloway and Inbosaki facilities which are almost 6,000 miles apart.

Restoration of South Shields's Herd Groyne lighthouse complete

The  £ 250,000 restoration of a much-loved South Tyneside landmark is complete.

The Herd Groyne Lighthouse, which sits at the mouth of the River Tyne, on South Shields seafront, dates back to 1882 and is one of the town's most recognizable buildings. The distinctive red structure was damaged in Storm Babet, last October, and has spent much of the last five months under restoration.

St. Mary's Lighthouse (UK) reopens after major restoration project

The restoration, which began in July, included specialist work to repaint the lighthouse tower and surrounding buildings , repair windows, roofs, and gutters, and carry out extensive cleaning and conservation across the site.

Built in 1898 and first lit that same year, St Mary's Lighthouse is situated on the tiny St Mary's Island, just north of Whitley Bay.
