Maine Opens Dozens of Lighthouses to the Public for One Day Only
Our knowledge of lighthouses is decidedly more Scooby-Doo than the real deal. You know: A crack of lightning splits open the heavens above as a lone shadow, dressed in an overcoat-length raincoat moves slowly along the craggy shore of a small spit of land, carrying a single lantern up the spiraling stairs.
But for a day at least, the state of Maine is trying to change all that. On September 14th, the US Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism, and the American Lighthouse Foundation will sponsor Maine Open Lighthouse Day.
