The oldest lighthouse in RI (Prudence Island) has changed hands. Heres what to know about it.

After a few speeches, words of thanks and some gulped shots of bubbling wine, Raymond Jenness wrenched open the door to Prudence Island Light, the oldest lighthouse in Rhode Island, in a ceremonial marker of the transfer of ownership from the federal government to the Prudence Conservancy.

Jenness, chairman of the Prudence Conservancy, dressed for the occasion on Saturday, with an unlit pipe, captain's hat, khakis, blazer and mud boots- despite calls for him to take the pipe out of his mouth from the small crowd on the sand in front of the lighthouse.

Renovations light way to next chapter for Tybee Island (GA) Lighthouse

There is a centuries-long story being told by two types of brick, exposed during the ongoing renovation of this historic lighthouse and removal of the surrounding stucco.

The tale goes back to 1773, as evident by the Savannah Grey bricks at the base of the tower that survived after Confederate soldiers set the lighthouse ablaze during the Civil War. The next chapter begins with adjoining fired bricks that were used later when the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1867.
