The beams of light extending out in two directions from the top of the Montauk Point Lighthouse swept across the moorlands for the first time in decades on Monday night.

Photos of Fresnel lens at Montauk, NY - Dan May
For most of the 20th century, the light beams that appear as a sweeping flood of light up close, but a flash every 8 seconds from a distance, was one of the brightest ever devised in its time, thanks to a special lens that focused reflected light into a concentrated laser of light far brighter than the bulb behind it could generate on its own.

On an exceptionally calm fall morning, Scott Dombrowski walked down an old dock towards a small dinghy. He looked out over the waters of Cape Porpoise, Maine, and commented on how still the water was for this time of year.

The Little Mark Island Monument, just over a mile off the tip of Bailey Island, looks more like an obelisk than a lighthouse.

It's incongruous, a jolt to the eyes- and yet, rising 55 feet above the chiseled gray water of Harpswell Sound, the granite spire ribbed with shadows somehow fits right in.
