Man charged with drunken driving causing death in crash that killed Mission Point Lighthouse, MI, volunteer keeper

A man accused of drunken driving and causing a crash that killed an Ohio resident who was volunteering as a lighthouse keeper near Traverse City has been charged with four crimes linked to that collision on M-22.

Mission Point, MI - Ralph Eshelman 

Kenneth Marotzke, 71, of Traverse City, was arraigned this week on charges of operating while intoxicated / causing death, two counts of operating under the influence / causing serious injury, and one count of having an open alcohol container in a vehicle.

Sodus Bay Lighthouse, NY, names new director

Mary Challman is taking the help at the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum, bringing years of museum leadership experience, according to the Finger Lake Times.

Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse, NY, celebrating 150th anniversary this Sunday

Iconic Plum Beach Lighthouse, RI, set to install rotating beacon for first time in over 100 years

Thanks to a local maritime expert, a local family trust, and thousands of license plates, one of the most passed-by lighthouses in the Ocean State will soon look a little different.

A beacon for whales: Gay Head Light, MA, to host device alerting boats to right whale safety measures

While maybe not the important aids to navigation they once were, lighthouses up and down the East Coast- including in Aquinnah - have become a beacon for preservation of the North Atlantic right whale.

Maritime Information Systems, an Orleans-based group, in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, recently produced a technology called a StationKeeper, which delivers targeted safety messages to vessels within right whale habitats.
