What's New
January 2, 2020
| Simulate Lightstation Established Years Maps | A new section has been added that allows you to show, either using a Google map or regional area maps, where the lightstations (lighthouses and lightships) are/were located. The simulation shows these lightstations as they were established using a timer to simulate each year. This allows you to visualize how the lightstations where established in the United States over time. Canadian lightstations are not included in this simulation. | |
| IMPORTANT: It is HIGHLY recommended that you only use this feature when you are connected to Wi-Fi or that you have unlimited data since it will cause a lot of data to be downloaded to your device. |

| A Whole New Look! | In conjunction with the new USLHS website, all the resources (Community, Light Lists, Lighthouse Photos, Architectural Drawings, and Inventory) were redesigned. The old resources navigation bar was replaced by a mini-navigation bar that allows you to easily access the other resources, and a sidebar was added that allows you to navigate through all of the pages of the active resource. However, the content of the resource is essentially the same. |
August 14, 2014
| Lightship Stations | Lightship stations are now included in the Light Lists resource! The lightship stations of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts have been researched. A list of all lightship stations that existed in the United States is also included. The information presented is on a lightship station basis and not a lightship itself. That is the individual vessels that were at each station are not included since this information was not presented in the light lists (actually the 1893-1908 light lists contained the vessel numbers, but that was it). | |
| Sign In Change | You will no longer be required to sign in to access the Light Lists, Lighthouse Photos, or Architectural Drawings resources. You still need to have an account if you want to access the USLHS Enthusiasts Community resource. If you currently do not have an account and you attempt to access the Community resource, a sign in page will be displayed where you can create an account for yourself. The sign in page will also be displayed if you attempt to access the Community resource and you are not currently logged in. If you are logged in, then your name will appear on the USLHS banner. | |
| Within the Light Lists resource, you have had the capability to filter lighthouses (and now also lightship stations) on the Static Arc Characteristic maps and the Dynamic Characteristics maps. However, your filter settings will now only be enabled if you sign in. Furthermore, your Startup Page (default to the light lists page) and Show Missing Light Lists (default to showing the missing lists) profile settings will use the defaults if you are not signed in. | ||
| Navigation Bar Upgrade (Again!) | The links that were formerly on the USLHS banner have been moved to the navigation bar as buttons; they are displayed with white text and a black background immediately to the right of the resource-specific buttons. Also, you must now hover for approximately a third of a second over a navigation bar menu item that has a droplist before the droplist will be displayed; this prevents unwanted flickering of the menu when moving your mouse quickly over the navigation bar. | |
| Editing Your Profile | The manner in which you edit your profile has been changed. After selecting the Edit Profile button on the navigation bar, your profile settings will be better grouped based on which resource you would be accessing. There are General information, Community resource, Light Lists resource, common to all resources, and password sections. By selecting the desired Edit button, you will be able to edit only those grouped settings. | |
| Stations Navigation Bar Button | The old Miscellaneous navigation bar button has been renamed Stations. There is a new Light Station States page that displays the U.S. states that have had lighthouses and lightships, and the U.S. commonwealths and Canadian provinces that have had lighthouses. Effectively the old Accessible Light Lists section on the Light Lists page was moved to this new page. | |
| Information Displayed in Tables | The appearance on how information is displayed in tables (e.g., Your Visits page) has been changed but the features are still the same. | |
| Toggle Between Area Maps | While on a static arc area map, you will be able to toggle to the equivalent dynamic characteristics area map, and visa versa. By clicking a button on the navigation bar while an area map is displayed, you will be able to perform an area map toggle. |

| USLHS Resources | A number of USLHS resources, including the Light List website, have been grouped together, all of which use a common sign in. The banner at the top of each page displays which resource is currently active, a link to change your profile, a link to change your password, a link to access the other resources, and a link to log out. | |
| Navigation Bar | The navigation bar was revamped to have dropdown lists, replacing the sidebars that were previously displayed. | |
| South Atlantic and Gulf Coast Light Lists | Light lists covering the South Atlantic and Gulf Coasts have been included. | |
| Additional North Atlantic Light Lists Included | Additional light lists covering the Atlantic coast for 1990-1996 have been included. | |
| Previously Missing Atlantic and Gulf Coasts Radiobeacons Included | New lights for 1963 and 1966 were found that contained the radiobeacon information for the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts have been included. | |
| Differential GPS Beacons | Starting in 1995 but stopping some time before 2004, differential GPS beacons were listed in the light lists and displayed on radiobeacon maps. These researched beacons are now displayed on the Radiobeacon pages. | |
| Dynamic Characteristic Area Maps | Area maps which are accessible from the USA Map page have been added that simulate, in a simplistic manner, the historical characteristics. For example, a flashing characteristic actually will flash the appropriate colors using the flash and eclipse durations researched in the light lists. All of characteristic types are supported. The size of the circles that represent the characteristics for each of the lighthouses is not intended to be accurate. | |
| Safari Browser Problems | Testing using the Safari browser on Windows had problems when accessing Google™ Maps. However, it appears that Apple is no longer supporting this browser on Windows operating systems. Whether there are problems using it on a Mac is unknown. It is HIGHLY recommended to use another modern browser on Windows. |

| Floating Toolbars and Navigation Bar | The navigation bar that appears at the top of the page will now remain at the top of the page even if you scroll the page. The sidebars that may appear on the left side of the page will now remain visible even if you scroll the page. These features were tested on the Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari browsers. For an unknown reason, the navigation bar buttons are not clickable in the Mozilla Firefox browser after the page is loaded and initially scrolled. | |
| Cleanup | Various features of the website were cleaned up. For example, forms and most other display information is now always displayed in the middle of the display area. |

| Startup Page | You now have the option of choosing one of five differents pages that is initially displayed after you successfully sign into the USLHS Light Lists website. You can define the page by editing your profile. | |
| Show Missing Light Lists on Lighthouse Information Pages | You now have the option of choosing whether you want all of the missing light lists shown on the historical lighthouse light list pages. By choosing not to show the missing light lists, the displayed information will be more compact. You can define the show missing light lists status by editing your profile. |

| New England Lighthouses | Researched lighthouses in the North Atlantic states which include Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have been added. This only includes the lighthouses on the Atlantic coast and NOT lighthouses on the Great Lakes. | |
| Audible Fog Signals | The audible fog signals (bells, whistles, diaphones, diaphragms, sirens) for researched lighthouses is now available. Audible fog signal information can be displayed for a researched light list or an individual researched lighthouse. This includes the audible fog signals for Pacific coast lighthouses, including Hawaii, which were researched in 2007. | |
| Other Transmitted Signals | Certain other transmitted signals (radiobeacon, direction finder) for researched lighthouses is now available. This signal information can be displayed for a researched light list or an individual researched lighthouse. This includes these additional signals for Pacific coast lighthouses, including Hawaii, which were researched in 2007. | |
| Distance Finding Stations | From the 1920's into the 1970's, the radiobeacons for some of the light stations were used for distance finding. For some of these years a graphical representation is available for display. Distance finding information can be displayed for a researched light list or an individual researched lighthouse on a per year basis. This includes the distance finding information for Pacific coast lighthouses, including Hawaii, which were researched in 2007. | |
| Radiobeacon Stations | A map showing all the radiobeacons, including those that are not at light stations, for the North Atlantic, Southern Atlantic and Gulf Coast, and Pacific regions can be displayed. Tables below the map show the different categories of radiobeacons. You can access a radiobeacon map for any year in which the light list has been researched that included this information. | |
| Special Radio Direction Finder Calibration Stations | A map showing all the special radio direction finder calibration stations, including those that are not at light stations, for the Atlantic and Gulf coasts as well as the Pacific coast can be displayed. Tables below the map shows more detailed information about each special radio direction finder calibration station. You can access a special radio direction finder calibration station map for any year in which the light list has been researched that included this information. | |
| State Historical Lighthouses | Prior to this release, you could access researched characteristic information on a state basis. This feature has been changed to show all of the researched lighthouses in the state and the established date of each lighthouse. For non-researched lighthouses, the characteristics for each lighthouse in 2004 will be displayed. | |
| Area Map Years | Prior to this release, the available years that could be displayed for an area map were limited. Now you can access an area map for any year in which the light list for the applicable area has been researched. | |
| Area Map Characteristic Identification | Prior to this release, the identity of the arcs that represented a characteristic on an area map may have been hard to determine, particularly on the maps that displayed many lighthouses. Now when you hover over a rectangle that represents a lighthouse on the map, the characteristics arcs will be displayed in black briefly; afterwards, as long as your cursor stays over the rectangle, the tooltip will continue to display the lighthouse name and its characteristic. Internet Explorer 8 does not support this capability! Internet Explorer 9 is a little temperamental in that if the feature is not working, a page refresh seems to fix it! See browser compatibility on browser-specific possible issues. | |
| Characteristic Graphical Display and Simulation | Prior to this release, a text version of each characteristic was displayed when characteristics for a lighthouse or the characteristics in a light list were shown. Now you can see a graphical representation of the characteristic simply by clicking on the characteristic that is displayed as a link. Additional, simulation of the characteristic is now supported. | |
| Early Pacific Coast Light Lists Added | Prior to this release, the earliest light list displayed on the website for the Pacific coast was 1881. The light lists for 1857, 1858, 1860, 1865, 1866, 1868, 1878, and 1879 are now included. | |
| Structure and Audible Fog Signal Information for 2004 | Prior to this release, only the characteristic was displayed for a non-researched lighthouse. Now you can see the structure and audible fog signal information (if any) for 2004 for non-researched lighthouses in the United States only. |
