Grand Manan Island
Lighthouses and Lobsters
October 2nd through October 10th, 2012
With the crisp air of autumn comes the chance to experience a quintessential lighthouse excursion and another U.S. Lighthouse Society first – a journey to “Downeast Maine” and Grand Manan Island. For starters, you’ll be amazed at the glorious colors on display across the region, from quiet coastal villages to scenic mountain passes, Maine offers a variety of settings for nature’s brilliant show and an unforgettable lighthouse tour! The description of this area, “Downeast Maine,” was coined many years ago when ships sailed east from Boston. With the wind at their backs, they were sailing downwind, hence the term ‘Down East.’
Further expanding on a great idea, this trip will lead you from the U.S. into Canada and the province of New Brunswick. Settled in the later part of the 18th Century by Loyalists after the American Revolution, Grand Manan Island now belongs to Canada, and is the largest in a series of islands located in the Bay of Fundy. Journey with us into the northern most reaches of New England and experience the best Maine has to offer.
Maine in the fall, a beautiful time to view lighthouses against a vivid palette of color. Join us for this visit to one of our premier lighthouse states and enjoy numerous lighthouses, wonderful scenery, great food and some special museums. A winner of an adventure!
