Lake Huron
Sep 08, 2018 to Sep 15, 2018

Lake Huron was originally called La Mer Douce, the sweet or freshwater sea by French explorers. Later, Lake Huron took its name from the Huron Indian people who lived along its beaches.

The Lake became a vital shipping route over the years. However, it could be treacherous and its storms deadly; at the bottom of Lake Huron rests more than 1,000 known shipwrecks. We however, plan on staying on land around or on the surface of this lake enjoying the refreshing qualities of a Michigan Great Lakes escape, just as the early city dwellers used to do to “get away from it all”.

Our tour starts in Detroit, Michigan with our welcome dinner and ends there as well with our farewell dinner. In between these two events we will enjoy a cruise past Gravelly Shoal and Charity Island, board Shepler’s Ferry to Mackinaw island and take a cruise on Lake St. Clair. Some of the lighthouses we will see include, Forty Mile Point, Poe Reef, Round Island, Alpena Harbor, Port Aux Barques, Peche Island and Bablo Island. All in all, we will visit and / or see thirty-four lighthouses along the way not to mention seeing some fantastic scenery.

Among the museums we plan on visiting are the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena and the Dossin Maritime Museum in Detroit. We will spend our nights at Detroit, Mackinaw City, Tawas and Port Huron with some time to ourselves to explore.
