Isle Royale & the Apostle Islands
Aug 18, 2018 to Aug 26, 2018

Minnesota, Michigan (Isle Royale) & Wisconsin (Apostle Islands)

Join the US Lighthouse Society in returning to the world’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Superior. The Ojibwe called the lake “gichi-gami”, meaning “great sea”. Three states border the western side of Lake Superior and our tour will visit lighthouses in all three.

We will start in Duluth, MN with a boat ride around the Duluth/Lake Superior harbor to view five lights including the Minnesota Point ruins. On our way north to Isle Royale, we will visit one of Minnesota’s best-known landmarks, Split Rock Lighthouse. One of the many crown jewels of Lake Superior is Isle Royale National Park, the nation’s only island park, home to four hard-to-get-to lighthouses.

Once arriving on Isle Royale, we will spend two nights on the island with opportunities to relax, hike or maybe even join in a work party at a lighthouse! While on the island we will have the opportunity to photograph lighthouses including, Isle Royale (Menagerie Island), Rock of Ages, Rock Harbor and Passage Island. We will stop to view the original Rock of Ages 2nd order Fresnel lens at the Wendigo Visitor Center on the island.

Returning to the mainland, we will visit Two Harbors and Grand Marais Lighthouses in Minnesota as we travel to the Apostle Islands in northern WI. The 21 Apostle Islands are a result of the glaciers that once covered North America, and the area is known for its collection of nine historic lighthouses. We will spend two days in the Apostle Islands cruising along windswept beaches, cliffs and sandstone sea caves. Magnificent waterfalls, jaw dropping sunsets, giant ore boats and perhaps even a moose or two are beckoning you to join us on a once in a lifetime trip.
