Montauk Lighthouse

Join us on Tuesday, December 5, at 7 p.m., for an informative look at the recently completed two million dollar restoration project at Montauk Lighthouse on Long Island, New York--the fourth oldest (1796) standing lighthouse in America. Also discussed will be the return of an historic 3 1/2 order bivalve-style "clamshell" Fresnel lens to the lantern room as an aid to navigation. The lens, which served in the lighthouse from 1903 to 1987, had been on exhibit in the museum on the site in recent years. After the amazing work of installing the lens back in the lighthouse, it was relighted on November 6.

We will have two special guests for this presentation. Henry Osmers, the historian for the Montauk Lighthouse, played an integral role in the restoration project and has written several books on Montauk and the lighthouse. Also with us will be RADM Dan May, USCG (ret.), a longtime ocean engineer for the Coast Guard who worked on numerous major lighthouse projects throughout the Northeast, including the design and building of a revetment for erosion control at Montauk Lighthouse. Dan has served as an invaluable technical advisor on the recent lens relighting project.

Advance registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event.
